Fifth Third Appoints Darren King as Head of Commercial Banking

Fifth Third Appoints Darren King to Lead Expanded Commercial Banking Business

Fifth Third Bancorp (NYSE: FITB) has appointed Executive Vice President Darren King as head of its Commercial Bank, bringing the company’s Commercial Banking and Regional Banking businesses together under his leadership. King, who has led the Commercial Bank on an interim basis since June 2026, will now oversee the expanded business, which includes the Regional Banking operations he already manages.

The leadership appointment comes as Fifth Third continues to strengthen its commercial banking capabilities, expand its presence across key U.S. markets and enhance the range of financial services available to business clients. The company aims to combine its broader geographic reach with specialized industry expertise and an integrated portfolio of banking solutions to serve businesses of different sizes and across multiple sectors.

The expanded Commercial Bank will bring together relationship-focused banking services and specialized financial capabilities, including lending, treasury management, payments, capital markets and wealth management. By coordinating these offerings, Fifth Third intends to provide clients with access to a wider range of financial solutions through a unified banking relationship.

King’s appointment follows a period of significant growth for Fifth Third’s commercial operations, including the combination with Comerica, which substantially increased the bank’s middle-market sales force and strengthened its industry-specific expertise.

Fifth Third Expands Commercial Banking Leadership

The appointment of King establishes a unified leadership structure for Fifth Third’s Commercial Bank and Regional Banking businesses. The combined organization is expected to support closer coordination between local banking teams, industry specialists and the broader resources of the company.

Under this structure, business clients can benefit from banking relationships that combine an understanding of their local markets with specialized knowledge of their industries. Fifth Third’s approach emphasizes connecting customers with the appropriate teams and financial services to address their business needs.

Commercial banking clients often require more than traditional lending products. Depending on their size, sector and financial objectives, businesses may need working capital, cash management, payment processing, capital markets access and support for long-term financial planning.

By bringing these capabilities together, Fifth Third aims to make its broader financial services platform more accessible to commercial customers. The bank’s relationship managers and industry specialists are expected to play an important role in identifying client requirements and coordinating solutions across the organization.

The expanded business also provides Fifth Third with a platform to deepen relationships with existing customers while pursuing opportunities to serve additional companies throughout its markets.

Comerica Combination Strengthens Commercial Banking Capabilities

Fifth Third’s commercial banking business has grown considerably following its combination with Comerica. The transaction increased the company’s middle-market sales force by more than 75%, significantly expanding its capacity to serve businesses.

Middle-market companies frequently have complex financial requirements that extend beyond basic deposit accounts and conventional loans. These organizations may need financing for expansion, treasury services to manage cash flows, payment solutions for suppliers and customers, and access to capital markets as their operations develop.

A larger sales organization gives Fifth Third additional resources to engage with these businesses and identify opportunities to support their financial objectives.

The Comerica combination also strengthened the bank’s industry specialties, including Innovation Banking, environmental services and equity fund finance. These areas provide specialized services to businesses and organizations operating in sectors with distinct financing structures and operational requirements.

Innovation Banking supports companies operating in innovation-driven industries, where financing needs may differ from those of more established businesses. Environmental services represents another specialized area, while equity fund finance provides financial solutions associated with investment funds and their activities.

The expansion of these capabilities allows Fifth Third to address a broader range of commercial banking requirements. It also supports the company’s strategy of combining relationship-based banking with industry knowledge and specialized financial products.

Focus on Relationship Banking and Industry Expertise

Fifth Third’s commercial banking strategy centers on connecting clients with teams that understand both their businesses and the industries in which they operate.

Tim Spence, chairman, CEO and president of Fifth Third, said King had guided the Commercial Bank through a significant period in its history and was positioned to lead its next stage of development.

Spence highlighted the company’s expanded banking team, industry expertise and geographic reach as important elements of its commercial strategy. He said Fifth Third is positioned to serve businesses across the Midwest, Southeast, Texas and California, as well as across the industries covered by its commercial banking teams.

The bank’s approach is designed to bring together local market knowledge and specialized industry capabilities. Businesses can have different financial needs depending on their sector, operating model, growth plans and geographic footprint. A company expanding into new markets, for example, may require additional credit facilities, more sophisticated treasury management and payment services, while an investment fund may need financing tailored to its capital structure.

Fifth Third aims to address these requirements by coordinating the expertise available across its commercial banking organization.

King said the bank’s approach begins with placing the right team in front of each client. He pointed to the strength of Fifth Third’s bankers across its markets and the knowledge of its industry teams.

His role, he explained, is to ensure clients can benefit from the full range of Fifth Third’s capabilities.

Darren King’s Banking Experience

King brings extensive banking experience to his expanded leadership position. He joined Fifth Third in 2025 as head of Regional Banking and Wealth Management and subsequently took on interim leadership of the Commercial Bank in June 2026.

Before joining Fifth Third, King spent 24 years at M&T Bank, where he held several senior leadership positions across finance and banking operations.

His responsibilities at M&T included serving as chief financial officer, head of consumer banking and head of business banking. He ultimately became co-head of business, overseeing all of the bank’s divisions.

This background provided King with experience across financial management, consumer banking, business banking and broader banking operations. His previous leadership responsibilities also included oversight of multiple business units, giving him experience coordinating operations across different areas of a financial institution.

At Fifth Third, his initial role leading Regional Banking and Wealth Management established his position within the company’s broader customer-facing operations. His subsequent interim leadership of the Commercial Bank placed him at the center of the organization’s commercial banking activities during a period of expansion.

His appointment to lead the combined business formalizes that responsibility and places the expanded Commercial Bank under a single executive leader.

Serving Businesses Across Key U.S. Markets

Fifth Third’s expanded commercial banking capabilities are supported by its presence across the Midwest, Southeast, Texas and California.

These markets include businesses operating across a variety of industries, from established middle-market companies to organizations with specialized financing and cash management requirements.

A broader geographic footprint can help a bank serve companies with operations in multiple regions. Businesses operating across state lines may need consistent banking support, coordinated credit arrangements and treasury services that can accommodate different locations and business units.

Fifth Third’s expanded organization aims to connect clients with local bankers while providing access to the company’s wider financial services platform.

The combination of geographic reach and industry specialization is central to the bank’s strategy. Rather than relying solely on traditional banking relationships, Fifth Third is seeking to deliver a more comprehensive range of services tailored to the needs of individual businesses.

The larger middle-market sales force also gives the company additional capacity to develop relationships with businesses that may require more sophisticated financial support as they grow.

Integrated Financial Solutions for Commercial Clients

The expanded Commercial Bank brings together several financial services that businesses commonly use to manage daily operations, fund growth and pursue strategic objectives.

Lending remains a core component of commercial banking, providing companies with financing for working capital, capital expenditures and other business needs. Treasury management services help organizations manage liquidity, monitor cash positions and oversee financial transactions.

Payments capabilities support the movement of funds between businesses, customers and suppliers. Capital markets services can help eligible clients access financing and manage aspects of their capital structures, while wealth management provides additional financial services for clients with relevant personal or business-related needs.

By connecting these capabilities through a coordinated banking relationship, Fifth Third aims to make it easier for businesses to access services that address multiple financial requirements.

This integrated model can also help the bank develop deeper relationships with clients as their needs evolve. A business that initially seeks a lending relationship may later require treasury management, payment services or additional financing options as its operations expand.

Fifth Third’s expanded platform is intended to support those changing requirements through a broader combination of products, expertise and relationship management.

Building on the Next Phase of Commercial Banking Growth

King’s appointment marks another step in Fifth Third’s efforts to develop its commercial banking franchise following the Comerica combination.

The increased middle-market sales force, expanded industry specialties and broader geographic reach provide the company with additional resources to pursue commercial banking opportunities.

The unified leadership structure is intended to help coordinate these resources and ensure that clients can access the bank’s wider capabilities. It also places responsibility for the Commercial Bank and Regional Banking businesses under an executive who has experience across multiple banking divisions.

For Fifth Third, the focus remains on combining strong client relationships with specialized expertise and a comprehensive range of financial services.

As King assumes leadership of the expanded Commercial Bank, the organization will continue building on its enlarged commercial platform and seeking to serve businesses across its markets and industry sectors.

The appointment reinforces Fifth Third’s strategy of bringing together relationship banking, industry knowledge and integrated financial solutions to support the needs of commercial clients as they manage operations, pursue growth and navigate an increasingly complex financial environment.
