Commerce Bank Enhances Family Banking With Complimentary Greenlight Access for Eligible Customers

Commerce Bank and Greenlight Financial Technology, Inc. are expanding access to family-focused financial tools through a new offering that gives eligible Commerce Bank customers complimentary access to Greenlight’s family finance app and debit card. The collaboration is designed to help families manage money together while giving children practical opportunities to develop financial skills from an early age.

Through the partnership, eligible Commerce Bank customers can use Greenlight’s digital platform to introduce children to everyday money management, including spending, saving, earning and financial education. The service also gives parents and caregivers tools to monitor activity, establish spending boundaries and support responsible financial decision-making.

The offering reflects a broader shift toward digital financial education, as families increasingly look for practical ways to teach children about money in an environment where many financial transactions take place electronically rather than through cash.

Bringing Financial Education Into Everyday Family Life

Financial literacy is often developed through repeated exposure to real-world financial decisions. For children and teenagers, experiences such as receiving an allowance, completing chores, making purchases and setting savings goals can provide opportunities to learn how money works.

Greenlight’s platform is designed around those everyday experiences. Parents can create customized spending controls for children, manage their debit cards, automate allowance payments, assign chore-based payments and establish savings goals. These features are intended to give children greater visibility into their own financial activity while allowing parents to remain involved in the process.

The platform also includes LevelUp, Greenlight’s interactive financial education game. The feature provides another way for children to learn financial concepts through an engaging digital experience rather than relying exclusively on traditional lessons or conversations about money.

For Commerce Bank customers, the partnership adds these capabilities to their existing banking relationship. Eligible customers can connect a qualifying Commerce Bank checking account as the preferred funding source for Greenlight and receive a waiver of the applicable monthly service fee under the terms of the offer.

Helping Children Develop Money Management Skills

One of the central elements of the offering is its focus on hands-on financial learning. Rather than simply explaining financial concepts, parents can use the Greenlight platform to allow children to practice those concepts through controlled, real-world experiences.

For example, parents can provide an allowance automatically or connect payments to completed chores. Children can then use their Greenlight debit cards for eligible purchases while parents retain the ability to establish spending limits and monitor transactions.

Savings tools can also help children understand the relationship between short-term spending and longer-term financial goals. By setting a target and tracking progress toward it, children can begin learning concepts such as budgeting, delayed gratification and goal-based saving.

These experiences can become increasingly relevant as children grow older. Early lessons about spending and saving can provide a foundation for more advanced financial concepts, including budgeting, credit, investing and responsible use of financial products.

Commerce Bank’s Stacy Regnier, director of consumer segmentation and transformation, emphasized the importance of developing these habits early.

“It is incredibly important to start building good financial habits with kids at an early age,” Regnier said. “Greenlight helps parents turn everyday money moments into meaningful learning opportunities that build confidence and financial responsibility, and we’re excited to offer this benefit to Commerce families.”

The comments highlight the partnership’s focus on integrating financial education into normal household activities rather than treating money management as a separate subject.

Digital Banking Changes the Way Families Teach Money

The partnership comes at a time when financial activity is becoming increasingly digital. Children growing up today are exposed to digital payments, mobile banking, online shopping and other technology-driven financial experiences from an early age.

That environment creates new opportunities for financial education but can also make it more difficult for children to understand the physical value of money. Digital transactions can happen quickly, sometimes without the same tangible connection associated with handing over cash.

Family-oriented financial technology platforms can provide parents with tools to make those digital transactions more visible and manageable. By allowing parents to establish controls and monitor activity, Greenlight creates a framework in which children can gain experience while caregivers remain involved.

The approach can also support conversations between parents and children about individual purchases, spending priorities and savings goals. Instead of discussing money only when a financial problem occurs, families can use regular transactions as opportunities to reinforce positive habits.

For banks, partnerships such as this also represent an expansion of the traditional banking relationship. Rather than focusing solely on individual account holders, financial institutions can provide products and services that address the needs of entire households.

Customizable Spending Controls for Families

Greenlight’s family finance platform provides parents with customizable controls intended to help manage children’s spending.

These controls can give parents greater visibility into how children use their debit cards while allowing young users to gain experience with independent spending. The approach creates a balance between financial independence and parental oversight.

For younger children, parents may want tighter controls and more direct involvement. As children become older and demonstrate greater responsibility, families can adjust the way the platform is used.

This flexibility is particularly relevant because financial education needs can change as children move through different stages of development. A child who is learning the difference between needs and wants may require a different approach from a teenager preparing to manage money more independently.

The digital nature of the platform allows families to make these adjustments as their needs evolve.

Allowances and Chore-Based Payments

Another feature of the Greenlight experience is automated allowance and chore-based payments.

Allowances can give children regular opportunities to manage money and make decisions about how it should be spent or saved. Chore-based payments can connect earnings with completed responsibilities, helping children understand the relationship between work, income and financial choices.

Automating these processes can also make them easier for parents to manage consistently. Rather than manually providing cash or transferring funds each time, parents can establish recurring arrangements through the platform.

The combination of earning, spending and saving can create a practical framework for teaching children about personal finance.

It also gives families an opportunity to discuss priorities. Parents can encourage children to divide money between immediate purchases and longer-term goals, helping them understand that financial decisions often involve trade-offs.

Savings Goals Encourage Long-Term Thinking

Saving is another important component of the Greenlight platform.

Savings goal tracking can help children establish specific objectives and monitor their progress. A child might save toward a particular purchase or another financial goal, providing a concrete example of how regular contributions can accumulate over time.

The visual and interactive nature of digital savings tools can make these concepts easier for younger users to understand. Instead of treating saving as an abstract idea, children can see progress toward a defined target.

For parents, this can provide another opportunity to discuss financial priorities, planning and patience.

These lessons can become increasingly valuable as children approach adulthood and begin making larger financial decisions. Understanding how to set goals and save consistently can contribute to broader financial confidence.

Interactive Financial Education Through LevelUp

Greenlight’s LevelUp financial education game adds an interactive component to the platform.

Financial literacy can sometimes be difficult to teach because many financial concepts are abstract or unfamiliar to children. An interactive learning environment can provide an alternative approach by presenting concepts in a format designed to encourage participation.

LevelUp forms part of Greenlight’s broader focus on combining financial education with practical money management.

The combination of educational content and real-world financial activity allows children to learn concepts and then apply them through spending and saving decisions. Parents can use those experiences to reinforce lessons and discuss financial choices with their children.

Supporting Caregivers Beyond Children’s Banking

While much of the offering focuses on children and teenagers, Greenlight also positions its platform as a tool that can help caregivers protect aging loved ones from financial scams.

Financial fraud targeting older adults remains an important concern for families. Digital financial tools can make it possible for caregivers to maintain greater awareness of financial activity and identify potentially unusual behavior.

The ability to manage financial activity within a family-oriented platform can therefore have applications beyond childhood financial education.

This broader household perspective supports the idea that financial management can involve multiple generations. Parents may teach children about money while also helping older family members navigate increasingly digital financial environments.

A Broader Role for Banks in Financial Wellness

The collaboration also illustrates how banks are expanding the range of services they provide to customers.

Traditional banking products such as checking and savings accounts remain central to household financial management, but customers increasingly expect digital tools that address specific financial needs.

By providing access to Greenlight, Commerce Bank can offer eligible customers an additional resource focused specifically on family financial education and money management.

Matt Wolf, chief commercial officer at Greenlight, described the collaboration as a way to extend the companies’ shared focus on financial education.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with another leading bank like Commerce Bank that shares Greenlight’s commitment to raise new generations of financially savvy kids and teens,” Wolf said. “Through this collaboration, families at Commerce Bank can enjoy a research-backed, best-in-class financial education experience.”

The partnership therefore combines Commerce Bank’s banking relationship with Greenlight’s specialized family finance technology.

Building Financial Confidence From an Early Age

The partnership between Commerce Bank and Greenlight reflects the growing intersection of traditional banking, financial technology and financial education.

For families, the value of a child-focused financial platform extends beyond providing access to a debit card. Tools for spending controls, allowances, chore payments, savings goals and financial education can give parents a structured way to introduce children to financial responsibility.

As more financial activity moves into digital environments, helping children understand how money works becomes increasingly important. Parents can use everyday purchases, savings decisions and earned allowances as opportunities to discuss responsible financial behavior.

At the same time, digital family finance tools can provide parents with greater visibility and control while allowing children to gain practical experience.

Through its collaboration with Greenlight, Commerce Bank is extending its family banking offering with a technology-driven financial education solution designed to support these experiences. For eligible customers, complimentary access to Greenlight Select provides an additional resource for introducing children to money management while keeping parents involved in the process.

The initiative ultimately places financial education within the context of everyday household banking, giving families tools they can use as children develop from early money-management experiences toward greater financial independence.
