PennyMac Financial Reports Strong Second-Quarter 2026 Financial Results

PennyMac Financial Reports Second-Quarter 2026 Results, Advances AI Transformation, and Maintains Dividend Despite Higher Interest Rate Headwinds

PennyMac Financial Services, Inc. (NYSE: PFSI), one of the nation’s leading mortgage banking and financial services companies, reported its financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2026, highlighting resilient operational execution despite a more challenging interest rate environment. Although higher mortgage rates weighed on profitability during the quarter, the company continued expanding its technology capabilities, improving refinance recapture performance, growing its servicing portfolio, and making meaningful progress on strategic initiatives that management believes will drive long-term shareholder value.

For the second quarter of 2026, PennyMac reported net income of $22 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, on total net revenues of $497 million. On an adjusted basis, which excludes certain non-recurring and market-related items, the company generated adjusted net income of $74 million, or $1.39 per adjusted diluted share, on adjusted net revenues of $566 million.

The Board of Directors also declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.30 per common share, payable on August 27, 2026, to shareholders of record as of August 17, 2026, reflecting the company’s continued commitment to returning capital to investors.

Higher Interest Rates Impact Quarterly Earnings

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David Spector acknowledged that second-quarter earnings were below management’s expectations as elevated mortgage rates continued to pressure loan origination activity.

PennyMac generated an annualized return on equity (ROE) of 2% during the quarter, while adjusted annualized ROE reached 7%.

Although both measures declined from the prior year, management emphasized that the company’s underlying operating performance remained solid and that steps are already underway to improve profitability.

According to Spector, management is actively aligning the company’s expense structure with current market conditions while continuing to invest strategically in technology that will reduce operating costs over time.

He explained that these efficiency initiatives are expected to position PennyMac for stronger profitability when mortgage origination volumes recover.

Technology Investments Continue to Deliver Long-Term Benefits

Technology remains a central component of PennyMac’s long-term strategy.

Management noted that investments made over recent years are beginning to generate meaningful operational improvements throughout the production business.

The company’s next-generation consumer direct loan origination platform now supports multiple artificial intelligence-powered automation capabilities that streamline customer interactions and internal workflows.

Among the newest innovations is PennyMac’s proprietary Natural Language Virtual Agent (NLVA), which has been deployed across both inbound and outbound customer communications.

The AI-powered virtual assistant is designed to improve customer service while reducing manual workload for employees.

Management believes ongoing technology investments will continue lowering the company’s cost-to-produce mortgages without sacrificing customer experience or production capacity.

Improved Refinance Recapture Positions Company for Future Growth

Despite slower overall mortgage activity, PennyMac achieved significant improvements in refinance recapture rates during the quarter.

Conventional first-lien refinance recapture increased 7 percentage points compared with the previous quarter, reaching 29%.

Government loan refinance recapture improved even more significantly, increasing 9 percentage points to 59%.

Management views recapture performance as an important competitive advantage because it reflects the company’s ability to retain existing servicing customers when they refinance.

As mortgage rates eventually decline and refinancing activity accelerates, stronger recapture rates should support higher loan production volumes and improved profitability.

Cenlar Acquisition Continues to Progress

PennyMac also continued making progress toward completing the acquisition of Cenlar’s subservicing business, one of the company’s most significant strategic initiatives.

Management expects the transaction to close during the fourth quarter of 2026.

Once integrated, the acquisition is expected to substantially expand PennyMac’s servicing platform while increasing recurring fee-based revenue.

Executives believe combining PennyMac’s technology platform with Cenlar’s servicing portfolio will create significant operating leverage through greater scale and automation.

Management continues viewing servicing expansion as a critical component of the company’s long-term strategy for generating more stable earnings across different mortgage market cycles.

Financial Performance Overview

Total second-quarter net revenues reached $497 million, representing:

  • A 9% decline compared with the first quarter of 2026.
  • A 12% increase compared with the second quarter of 2025.

Net income declined to $22 million, compared with:

  • $82 million during the previous quarter.
  • $136 million one year earlier.

Diluted earnings per share fell to $0.41, compared with:

  • $1.53 during the first quarter.
  • $2.54 during the second quarter of 2025.

Adjusted results also declined year over year.

Adjusted net revenues totaled $566 million, down 4% sequentially but up 5% from the previous year.

Adjusted net income reached $74 million, while adjusted diluted earnings per share totaled $1.39.

Although profitability declined because of higher interest rates, PennyMac continued maintaining a strong capital position.

Book value per share increased to $83.49, representing a 7% increase from one year earlier.

Loan Production Reflects Challenging Market Conditions

Total loan acquisitions and originations reached $34.9 billion in unpaid principal balance (UPB) during the quarter.

That represented an 8% decline compared with the second quarter of 2025.

Mortgage production remained under pressure as elevated interest rates reduced overall refinancing activity and intensified competition within the mortgage industry.

However, performance varied significantly across production channels.

Consumer Direct Continues Expanding

Consumer direct originations totaled $5.6 billion, increasing an impressive 103% compared with the second quarter of 2025.

Although volumes declined sequentially from the first quarter due to seasonal and interest rate factors, year-over-year growth reflected stronger refinance activity and improved customer retention.

Management credits much of this success to improved refinance recapture rates and enhanced digital capabilities.

Broker Direct Shows Continued Growth

Broker direct fallout-adjusted lock volume reached $6.5 billion.

While slightly lower than the previous quarter, volume increased 21% from the prior year.

Management attributed the increase primarily to continued market share gains and favorable broker relationships.

Correspondent Lending Faces Competitive Pressure

Correspondent production totaled $20.5 billion.

Volumes declined both sequentially and year over year due to an increasingly competitive mortgage marketplace.

Management indicated that pricing pressure across the correspondent channel continued affecting overall production profitability.

Production Revenue Margins Improve

Despite lower overall production volume, PennyMac achieved stronger production revenue margins.

Revenue margins increased to 77 basis points of fallout-adjusted lock volume, compared with 55 basis points during the second quarter of 2025.

Improved margins reflected favorable pricing dynamics despite weaker mortgage demand.

Production segment revenue reached $243 million, increasing from $211 million one year earlier.

However, revenue declined sequentially from the first quarter because of lower production volume and unfavorable market pricing impacts affecting specialized mortgage pools.

Production expenses increased to $205 million, reflecting higher staffing capacity supporting the consumer direct business.

Overall, production segment pretax income totaled $38 million, down from $58 million during the second quarter of 2025.

Servicing Portfolio Continues to Grow

Mortgage servicing remains one of PennyMac’s largest and most stable business segments.

At June 30, 2026, the company’s owned servicing portfolio reached $488 billion in unpaid principal balance.

That represented a 5% increase compared with one year earlier.

Total servicing portfolio volume expanded to $731 billion, supported by ongoing loan production exceeding runoff from mortgage prepayments.

Subservicing volume remained relatively stable at $235 billion.

Management expects future servicing growth to accelerate following completion of the Cenlar acquisition.

Servicing Business Generates Stable Revenue

The servicing segment generated pretax income of $22 million during the quarter.

Although lower than the prior year, profitability improved compared with the first quarter.

Excluding market valuation adjustments, servicing pretax income reached $99 million, illustrating the underlying earnings power of the servicing platform.

Loan servicing fees increased to $536 million, reflecting continued portfolio growth.

Additional servicing income also benefited from:

  • Higher earnings on custodial deposits.
  • Increased balances held on behalf of borrowers.

These gains partially offset higher realization of mortgage servicing rights cash flows resulting from changing prepayment activity.

Mortgage Servicing Rights Continue Influencing Earnings

Mortgage servicing rights (MSRs) remained an important driver of quarterly earnings volatility.

During the second quarter, PennyMac recorded $77 million of MSR valuation-related losses after accounting for hedge performance.

These results included approximately $52 million in hedge costs.

Although MSR valuations fluctuate as interest rates change, management continues emphasizing that the servicing business generates substantial recurring cash flows over longer periods.

Credit Quality Remains Stable

Credit performance remained generally stable during the quarter.

The company’s owned servicing portfolio reported a 60-plus-day delinquency rate of 4.1%, slightly improving from the previous quarter.

While provisions for credit losses increased modestly, management indicated that overall portfolio performance remained consistent with expectations.

Corporate Expenses Improve

Corporate and other operations reported a pretax loss of $29 million, improving from $35 million one year earlier.

Corporate revenue increased significantly because of a non-recurring gain related to an increase in the value of PennyMac’s minority investment in Vesta.

Corporate expenses declined modestly compared with the previous quarter, primarily because marketing expenditures associated with the 2026 Winter Olympics concluded.

However, expenses remained above prior-year levels due to increased legal costs and ongoing brand investment.

Amazon Web Services Partnership Expands

During the quarter, PennyMac expanded its strategic relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate its transformation into an AI-driven mortgage technology company.

Management believes cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and automation will play increasingly important roles in improving operational efficiency throughout the mortgage lifecycle.

The partnership is expected to support continued development of intelligent automation, advanced analytics, and customer service enhancements.

Key Operating Highlights

Several important operational achievements defined the quarter:

  • Consumer direct loan origination technology successfully enabled rapid deployment of AI-powered automation.
  • Proprietary Natural Language Virtual Agent capabilities expanded across customer interactions.
  • Conventional refinance recapture improved to 29%.
  • Government refinance recapture increased to 59%.
  • Progress continued toward completing the acquisition of Cenlar’s servicing platform.
  • Strategic cloud and AI partnership with Amazon Web Services expanded.
  • Book value per share increased 7% year over year.
  • Quarterly dividend of $0.30 per share was maintained.

Management expects mortgage market conditions to remain challenging throughout the remainder of 2026 as higher interest rates continue limiting industry-wide origination volumes.

As a result, PennyMac expects adjusted return on equity to remain in the high single-digit range during the balance of the year while expense reduction initiatives continue.

Executives remain optimistic about the company’s long-term outlook, citing several important growth drivers, including expanding artificial intelligence capabilities, improving refinance recapture performance, increasing operating efficiency, continued servicing portfolio growth, and the anticipated completion of the Cenlar subservicing acquisition.

Management believes these strategic initiatives, combined with PennyMac’s scale, technology investments, and diversified business model, position the company to capitalize on future improvements in the mortgage market while delivering stronger profitability and long-term value for shareholders.
