The Department of the Navy has named Navy Federal’s branch at Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni, Japan, as its “Credit Union of the Year” for 2023. This recognition marks the 18th consecutive year and the 21st year overall that a Navy Federal branch has been honored for its service to a base community.
“Our members are our mission, and this award reflects our commitment to helping them achieve financial wellness,” said Captain Keith Hoskins (USN Retired), executive vice president of branch operations at Navy Federal.
Located on the only Marine Corps installation on mainland Japan, the Iwakuni Branch serves over 10,000 American citizens stationed there.
“As the largest credit union in the world, serving U.S. citizens at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, it’s our duty to support the military community as they serve our country, just as we do stateside,” said Maria White-Marchus, assistant vice president of branch operations. “We are dedicated to helping our members reach their financial goals for many years to come.”
Colonel Richard M. Rusnok, Jr., Commanding Officer of Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, submitted the award nomination, highlighting the branch’s ability to provide “world-class service” along with a “customized individual experience” reminiscent of a small neighborhood credit union.
Some of the key resources offered by the Iwakuni Branch include:
- Financial education services to help members understand debt, budgeting, and credit health.
- Outreach initiatives to military and family support groups, recruitment programs, and base events.
- Promotional share certificates at various terms throughout the year to encourage saving.
In 2023, the Iwakuni Branch processed nearly $13,600 in cash transactions and over 22,000 account servicing transactions, in addition to assisting with 612 instant-issue debit cards.
“It’s an honor to receive this award year after year, as it reflects our core values,” said Captain Hoskins. “Our members are our mission, and this award demonstrates our commitment to helping them achieve financial wellness.”
