First Internet Bank Promotes Nick Campbell to Chief Lending Officer
First Internet Bank has promoted Nick Campbell to Senior Vice President and Chief Lending Officer, expanding his responsibilities across the bank’s nationwide lending operations. In his new position, Campbell will oversee the organization’s diverse lending businesses and play a central role in shaping lending strategy, managing portfolio growth and expanding specialized financing solutions for businesses and consumers.
Campbell’s responsibilities will span several major lending areas, including small business lending, owner-occupied and investor commercial real estate, commercial and industrial lending, construction lending, single-tenant lease financing, franchise finance and consumer lending. His broad mandate places him at the center of First Internet Bank’s efforts to balance loan growth with disciplined underwriting, effective risk management and long-term profitability.
The appointment represents the latest step in Campbell’s nearly decade-long career with First Internet Bank. Since joining the institution in 2017, he has held positions of increasing responsibility across commercial real estate, credit administration and risk management. His experience across both lending and credit functions gives him a broad perspective as he takes responsibility for the bank’s overall lending organizations.
Expanding Leadership Across the Lending Organization
As Chief Lending Officer, Campbell will be responsible for helping establish and execute First Internet Bank’s lending strategy across its various business lines. His role will involve overseeing portfolio development while ensuring lending activities remain aligned with the bank’s risk management framework and broader strategic objectives.
The bank’s lending platform serves a wide range of customers, from small businesses and franchise operators to commercial property owners, developers and consumers. Each segment has distinct financing requirements, making specialized lending expertise an important part of the bank’s business model.
Campbell will oversee lending teams serving these different customer groups and will work to expand solutions designed to address their individual financial needs. His responsibilities will include supporting portfolio growth while maintaining the credit quality and risk discipline that have been central to the bank’s approach.
Nicole Lorch, President and Chief Operating Officer of First Internet Bank, said Campbell has demonstrated strong leadership, lending expertise and commitment to clients throughout his career at the bank.
Lorch also highlighted his record of disciplined execution and sound risk management, noting that those capabilities will be particularly important as Campbell assumes responsibility for the bank’s broader lending strategy.
A Career Built Within First Internet Bank
Campbell joined First Internet Bank in March 2017 as Vice President and CRE Portfolio Manager. His career at the bank has subsequently included several increasingly senior positions.
After initially focusing on commercial real estate portfolio management, Campbell became Vice President and CRE Relationship Manager. He later moved into credit administration, serving as First Vice President, Credit Administration.
In 2021, he was promoted to First Vice President, Commercial Real Estate. He subsequently took on responsibilities as First Vice President and Senior Credit Officer.
This progression provided Campbell with experience on both sides of the lending process. His earlier roles were closely connected to originating and managing commercial real estate relationships, while his later credit leadership responsibilities involved underwriting, credit administration and risk oversight.
That combination of commercial and credit experience is particularly relevant to his new position. As Chief Lending Officer, Campbell will need to balance opportunities for portfolio expansion with appropriate risk controls across multiple lending categories.
Experience in Commercial Real Estate and Construction Lending
During his tenure at First Internet Bank, Campbell has contributed to the growth and performance of the bank’s commercial real estate portfolio. His work has been particularly focused on construction and development lending, areas that require careful assessment of project economics, borrower strength, market conditions and execution risk.
Construction lending can present unique challenges for financial institutions because loan performance can be affected by factors ranging from project costs and timelines to property demand and broader economic conditions.
Campbell’s experience in this area gives him a strong understanding of the factors involved in evaluating and managing commercial real estate credit.
His transition into senior credit leadership further expanded that perspective. As Senior Credit Officer, he led credit administration and risk management initiatives while working with lending teams on credit strategy and underwriting.
That experience allowed him to work across the organization rather than focusing exclusively on individual lending relationships.
Balancing Growth With Risk Management
One of the most important responsibilities associated with Campbell’s new position will be maintaining the balance between lending growth and credit quality.
Banks seek to grow their loan portfolios because lending is a core source of revenue. However, growth must be supported by appropriate underwriting standards and risk management practices.
Campbell’s background in credit administration and risk management is expected to support First Internet Bank as it pursues growth across its lending businesses.
Lorch emphasized Campbell’s record of disciplined execution and sound risk management, pointing to those qualities as important elements of his leadership approach.
The bank operates in a lending environment where economic conditions, interest rates, borrower demand and credit risks can change over time. A diversified lending platform requires leadership capable of monitoring these factors across different asset classes and customer segments.
Campbell’s broad experience across commercial real estate and credit functions provides a foundation for managing these considerations.
Supporting Small Businesses and Commercial Customers
Small business lending will be one of the areas under Campbell’s oversight. Small and mid-sized businesses often require financing for working capital, expansion, equipment, acquisitions, real estate and other business needs.
Specialized lending can help financial institutions develop deeper relationships with these customers by providing financing structures that reflect their individual circumstances.
First Internet Bank’s lending organization also includes commercial and industrial lending, which serves businesses outside the real estate sector. Campbell will oversee this area as part of his broader responsibilities.
The combination of small business and commercial lending gives the bank an opportunity to support companies at different stages of development and across different industries.
Commercial Real Estate and Specialized Financing
Commercial real estate remains another significant component of Campbell’s responsibilities. First Internet Bank provides financing for both owner-occupied and investor commercial real estate, as well as construction and development projects.
The bank also operates specialized lending businesses focused on single-tenant lease financing and franchise finance.
Single-tenant lease financing can provide capital for properties occupied by individual tenants, while franchise finance supports businesses operating within established franchise systems.
These specialized areas require lenders to understand both the underlying credit and the specific characteristics of the businesses and assets being financed.
Campbell’s experience across commercial real estate and credit administration gives him exposure to many of the considerations involved in these transactions.
Expanding Consumer Lending
Campbell’s responsibilities will also extend to consumer lending, broadening his mandate beyond commercial and business-focused financing.
Consumer lending serves individuals with financing needs that can differ significantly from those of commercial borrowers. Managing these portfolios requires appropriate underwriting processes, risk controls and customer-focused solutions.
By overseeing both business and consumer lending organizations, Campbell will have responsibility for a broad portion of First Internet Bank’s overall lending platform.
A Focus on Sustainable and Profitable Growth
Campbell said he was honored to take on the expanded leadership position and work alongside the teams serving First Internet Bank’s clients.
He emphasized the bank’s foundation of specialized lending and customer service, combined with a disciplined approach to growth.
His comments reflect a strategy focused not simply on increasing loan volumes but on building a sustainable lending platform. Responsible growth requires understanding customer needs while maintaining appropriate standards for credit quality and risk management.
Campbell said he looks forward to partnering across the bank to support clients and responsibly grow its lending platform.
That approach is consistent with the responsibilities of a chief lending officer, whose role often involves balancing business development opportunities with the institution’s overall risk appetite and strategic objectives.
More Than Two Decades of Banking Experience
Campbell brings more than 20 years of banking and lending experience to his new role.
Before joining First Internet Bank, he held positions with FORUM Credit Union and Monroe Bank, giving him experience in financial services before beginning his tenure with First Internet Bank.
His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a Master of Business Administration from Ball State University.
Together with his professional experience, his academic background has supported a career that has progressively expanded from lending and relationship management into credit leadership and enterprise-level responsibilities.
Strengthening First Internet Bank’s Lending Leadership
Campbell’s promotion represents an important leadership development for First Internet Bank as the institution continues to manage a diversified lending platform.
His experience in commercial real estate, construction and development lending, credit administration and risk management provides him with exposure to multiple aspects of the lending lifecycle.
As Chief Lending Officer, he will now apply that experience across the bank’s broader lending organization.
His mandate will include overseeing lending strategy, supporting portfolio growth and expanding specialized financial solutions for businesses and consumers. At the same time, he will be expected to maintain the disciplined approach to underwriting and risk management that has characterized his previous leadership roles.
First Internet Bank’s appointment of Nick Campbell as Senior Vice President and Chief Lending Officer brings an experienced internal leader into one of the institution’s key executive lending positions.
Having joined the bank in 2017, Campbell has progressed through commercial real estate, relationship management, credit administration and senior credit leadership roles. His experience provides a combination of customer-facing lending expertise and institutional risk management knowledge.
In his new position, Campbell will oversee small business lending, commercial real estate, commercial and industrial lending, construction lending, single-tenant lease financing, franchise finance and consumer lending.
His priorities will include aligning the bank’s lending strategy with its long-term objectives, supporting sustainable portfolio growth and continuing to develop specialized financing solutions.
For First Internet Bank, the promotion strengthens the leadership of a lending platform designed to serve both commercial and consumer customers nationwide. Campbell’s background and expanded responsibilities position him to guide the bank’s lending activities while maintaining the focus on disciplined growth, sound risk management and long-term client relationships that will remain central to the institution’s strategy.
